Riar Rizaldi works as an artist and filmmaker. His artistic practice focuses mainly on the relationship between capital and technology, worldview, and the possibility of speculative fiction. His works have been shown at various international film festivals (including Locarno, IFFR, Viennale, BFI London, Cinema du Reel, Vancouver, and many more) as well as NTT InterCommunication Center Tokyo, Centre Pompidou Paris, Times Museum Guangzhou, Istanbul Biennial, Biennale Jogja, and National Gallery of Indonesia amongst others.
On Extended Asia, 2022 – Vol. 3: Discovery, Riar Rizaldi created an A/V work titled Neonatal Unit.
“Neonatal Unit” A lost video signal transmitted to the past from the future of remilitarized Indonesia archipelago when the demographic dividend reached its peak. Narrated by one of the members of the Operation of Sovereignty for Gestational and Surrogate Mothers, the video dissects the dynamic of natalism, nationalism, agency, and reproductive technology, as well as questioning the meaning of Kita (‘we’ in Indonesian).
